MacX DVD Ripper Pro Giveaway: Rip All Your DVDs to Mac iPhone iPad
There’s no shortage of free DVD ripping utilities for OSX, but they don’t always make the process as seamless or intuitive as it could be. Some hit you up with unwieldy interfaces and endless option menus, which might be great if copying DVDs to your hard disk at optimum quality is your major goal, but aren’t so great if you simply want to transcode a favourite movie for viewing on your iPad on the train. Others are easier to use, but lack the features to decrypt encrypted DVDs so that you can stream the contents across your home network or watch them on your mobile device of choice.
That’s where paid-for apps really make their mark. We are pleased to announce an exclusive giveaway of MacX DVD Ripper Pro, courtesy of MacXDVD for all of our readers. You can grab a free copy of MacX DVD Ripper Pro from now to June 2 inclusive with nary a penny
MacX DVD Ripper Pro is easy to use and focused on getting the content you want to watch in the format you need to watch it, but it still has the features to sidestep the latest encryption and copy-protection schemes. Plus, if you want more control, you have it, with a full range of options to control the encoding process plus tools to trim your video, crop in on the picture or merge titles together. You can even extract sequences or segments and post them to YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo; a brilliant option for film fans, critics or even professionals putting together an online highlights reel.
MacX DVD Ripper Pro couldn’t be much easier to work with. To rip a DVD all you need to do is insert it in the drive, click the DVD button to load it, then select an output profile. The app ships with a range of popular profiles built-in, covering iPads and iPhones, Android and Windows phones and tablets, Blackberry devices, the Google Chromecast and even Sony’s PlayStation game consoles and handheld games machines. Whichever profile you select, you can use a slider to set MacX DVD Ripper Pro to work at its highest quality settings but slowest speed or sacrifice a little image quality for a faster rip - or anywhere in-between.
Just click Done and you’ll find further options, enabling you to choose which films, TV episodes or bonus features you want to rip, plus which soundtracks and subtitles to hold onto. You can even set trim marks for the video if you’re not looking to backup or transcode the whole shebang. Finally, you can choose to opt for the High Quality Engine, de-interlace interlaced material for a improved quality, or stick to a Safe mode - handy for troublesome video files.
Click run, and MacX DVD Ripper Pro’s advanced decryption and transcoding engine goes into action. Speed will depend on your individual system, the speed of your DVD drive and the DVD you’re trying to rip. On standard settings a Core i5 Mac Mini took under thirty minutes to rip the 96 minute Lego movie to H.264 with AAC, and that’s with an external DVD drive. The results are impressive; virtually indistinguishable even on the medium speed/quality setting from the original DVD, and great for casual phone or tablet viewing.
If you need the power of a more sophisticated transcoding tool, then you have it on tap. You can switch video codecs, adjust the frame rate and resolution, or up the bit-rate to preserve as much image quality as possible. You can also set the audio codec, bit-rate and channels independently. Click on the Edit button next to your chosen track and you can also trim the video to copy and transcode a smaller section or even a clip, or crop the picture to focus on a specific area.
We had no problems backing up and transcoding recent titles from Warner Bros., Disney and Sony, and MacX DVD Ripper Pro claims to sidestep all the major current encryption and copy-protection schemes. What’s more, the developers promise continual updates to cover any new schemes or enhancements that emerge, though given where we are in DVD’s lifespan, there probably won’t be many more.
Overall, MacX DVD Ripper Pro makes easy work of getting movies and TV off DVD and into a more modern digital format you can preserve, stream or watch on new devices. It also takes a smart approach to doing so, concentrating on the core functionality without removing the tools and options power users need; they’re all there, and you don’t have to look too hard to find them.
